About the Program Garland Branch offers riding lessons for riders ages 6 and up. Hunt seat and dressage are the primary disciplines taught, with a bit of western thrown in for fun. All riders start with private lessons and as they become comfortable with their horses they can be moved to a group lesson. Group lessons offer riders with the opportunity to learn from other riders, and to interact with the rest of the barn crew. Group lessons are capped at 4 riders with most groups featuring three riders. Currently approximately 30 riders take lessons at Garland Branch. Most riders take lessons once a week, while some ride every other week, and several ride twice a week.
All students are invited to participate in the two schooling shows that are held at the barn every year (one in the spring and one in the fall). In addition, riders who ride more than once a week are eligible to participate in off site shows. We actively compete in local dressage shows and hunter schooling shows. We also host games days, camp days, and summer camps to supplement the rider's education.
Garland Branch is a laid back barn that wants all of its riders to reach their goals whether those goals include showing or just becoming a more competent equestrian. We pride ourselves on a supportive atmosphere and a lack of barn drama!
About the Instructor
Holly Winkeljohn has been teaching horseback riding for over 18 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in Animal Science with a minor in Equine Science and an emphasis on teaching Equitation. Over the years she has been certified as a level 4 instructor with the CHA and as both a therapeautic and driving instructor with NARHA. She has competed hunters on the A circuit, and has shown Appaloosa and Arabian breed shows. She believes first and foremost that riding is supposed to be fun. After all - we spend a lot of money on these animals... shouldn't we enjoy it? She also firmly believes that ALL riders and horses will benefit from a dressage base. All lessons include a bit of dressage to help riders and horses reach their potential.
